In the bar-wasteland around my office, a very welcome addition has been Whiskey Rebel on 28th and Lexington. Curry Hill doesn’t seem like a natural spot for such a bar, and isn’t, but I think that’s why it works.
What we love about the bar is the free popcorn or snack mixes they serve and the the happy hour specials. Right now the current promotion is $2 beers (usually Coronas) from 4-8 pm. But the deals keep going all night with $3 Bud Lights, $5 martinis, margaritas and shots of Patron, Jager and Jameson! Seriously.
If the cheap drinks make you hungry, then walk across the street to the new Bambino’s Pizzeria, another unlikely addition to Curry Hill. The staff is so friendly and the pizza is good too, so we’re fans. Over the past few weeks I’ve tried the garlic knots, pepperoni slice and a personal buffalo chicken pizza. You can easily split this pizza four ways. While some may be put off that they give you Ken’s salad dressing packets for your ranch or blue cheese dressing, I kind of liked that you had an option between the two.
While I enjoyed my pizza, I wish the crust was a little less crispy and I do hate it when they add marinara sauce first to a buffalo pizza. I prefer just chicken, buffalo sauce and blue cheese/ranch dressing. I mentioned this after the fact and they said sometimes they don’t add the marinara so if you order some, just simply request that they only use that delicious buffalo sauce when making your pizza.
Another plus is that they make buffalo chicken rolls for only $5, which is a first for me. I’m used to regular chicken rolls and love them, but the buffalo twist was a nice surprise. They’re also building a garden in the back which will make for some nice outdoor dining.
If you’re looking for a cheap happy hour followed up by some good pizza, then despite all odds, head over to 28th and Lex and enjoy!
