It all started with a move from Williamsburg to the Upper East Side, where without a laundry room and with very few clean clothes, Laura had to send out her laundry. After paying nearly $30 to get her laundry done - and being charged an additional 50 cents per item that was to be dried on a hanger - Laura thought there had to be something out there that served as a guide for cheap deals and meals around Manhattan.
Venting her frustrations to her co-workers over a dodgeball game, Laura decided to start a blog. As a result, 89thandbroke.com was born in October 2008, with a focus on restaurant reviews and deals. From the beginning, Caryn constantly wrote posts for the blog and was brought on full-time during the winter of 2008. While many of the posts we write are from our own experiences at NYC restaurants, we also scan newsletters and Web sites for deals that we think many of our readers may enjoy.
