After reading four star reviews on Yelp for Ichiro, I decided to check out this sushi establishment on the Upper East Side on Second Ave between 87th and 88th. Although I’ve lived in the neighborhood for several months, I still haven’t found my go-to sushi place so was eager to give this place a try.
I ordered a Boston roll and Spicy Tuna roll for pick up. The staff was very friendly over the phone and it was ready for pick up in 5-10 minutes. The inside of the restaurant looked nice, but I wasn’t able to get the full experience since I was in only for a few minutes.
The sushi was typical NYC prices, with the Spicy Tuna roll coming in at $5.95, the Boston roll at $4.95. The roll was good, but Ben tried it and complained it did not have as much tuna as he’d like. I thought it was good, but either the rice was too soft or something because everytime I picked it up with chopsticks, the roll seemed to just fall apart. I feel like I never can cut sushi in half, and unfortunately, I was able to.
The Boston roll also easily fell apart, but I feel like a lot of these rolls generally do, especially if they are on the larger side. For those unfamiliar, most Boston rolls have shrimp, cucumber and mayo, but this roll had way too much in it - crab meat, shrimp, cucumber, lettuce and mayo. While I thought this combination might be great, it just caused the roll to collapse while eating it. The crab meat also didn’t have much flavor to it - and the only reason I know this is because most of the crab meat I ate was off the bottom of the container. Don’t judge.
I finished the meal feeling full of satisfactory sushi. It was okay and a decent takeout meal, but if anyone has any better sushi recommendations on the UES, I’m happy to hear them.

try Tenzan on 89th and 2nd. They have great, fresh sushi and are able to make with brown rice.
