Effy’s - I’d Effing Go Back

After months of suggesting that we eat at Effy’s Cafe because of a recommendation I heard from my co-worker Lauren, Ben and I finally hit it up for dinner the other night when craving a couple light sandwiches.

Effy’s is located on 3rd Avenue between 91st and 92nd and has a cute little cafe vibe. The cafe has free wi-fi and had a few students studying in it. Effy’s was also playing some interesting background music, but at a good volume so Ben and I could talk without feeling like we were interrupting the students.

We ordered two sandwiches at the counter to split. First we went with a turkey sandwich with brie, honey mustard, lettuce and tomato on the bread of our choice, which was a roll. We also ordered a wrap which had spicy chicken, Israeli salad (tomatoes and cucumber) and hummus. We also ordered a hot chocolate and homemade lemonade. The grand total came to $20 and while we didn’t take advantage of it, there was also a buy one get one danish and muffin special between 4pm - 10 pm.

My initial thoughts were that the turkey sandwich was good, but I was really looking forward to the brie on the sandwich and you couldn’t really taste it. It would be a little better if grilled on a press or just the cheese could be warmed up a little. In the words of Ben, “the brie needs to be melted or not be there at all.”

I wasn’t looking as forward to the spicy chicken wrap, but it was amazing. The combination of the hummus and the Israeli salad was actually really good. I was worried the spicy chicken would be too spicy, but if anything, it could have been spicier.

I tried the hot chocolate and thought it was great, had a really good coconutty aftertaste. The pink lemonade however, was nothing special and I probably wouldn’t order it again.

Overall, I would definitely head back to Effy’s. It’s a great little sandwich place that’s be perfect for a light, quick bite to eat. There were a ton of breakfast options on the menu too, so I’d like to see if it beats our local bagel joint and diner.
