One of the best things about our new apartment may be the fact that the previous resident never bothered to update her address on all of her magazine subscriptions. So when New York Magazine’s “Live Well. Spend Less” issue arrive, my roommates and I devoured the issue - and discovered that the Museum of Modern Art is free on Fridays between 4 - 8 p.m.
Now, I’m not a huge fan of art but lately have figured that I might as well see some of the cultural stuff NYC has to offer, especially if it is at an affordable price. Therefore, myself and three of my friends headed over to the MoMA after work on Friday. There wasn’t a wait for tickets, and while many free events in NYC tend to be packed, we were able to easily move through the museum and see most of it in under 2 hours - keep in mind that I’m not the type of person to sit and read the descriptions, or try to discuss what the artist was thinking or ponder the thickness of the brush strokes.
Some of the highlights in the MoMA for me included the Andy Warhol collection (floor 4), Van Gogh’s Olive Tree (floor 4), and Joan Miro’s Still Life with Old Shoe (floor 5). The second floor also had some incredible sculptures and were definitely worth a visit.
If you are looking to see some art at an affordable price, Friday nights at the MoMA is the way to go. You can see most of it in a night, and if you aren’t able to finish the whole museum, you could always come back another Friday. For me however, it’s something to say that I’ve done in NYC, and would only really visit again if it had an interesting new exhibit or I was playing tour guide to visiting friend. I’m just not that into art to make monthly visits.
