89th And Broke

I'm a young professional living in Astoria (formerly of Williamsburg, the UES and Murray Hill - I move a lot!). I'm always looking for something fun to do or the best place to grab a drink and dinner at an affordable price around the city. Have a suggestion? Email me at Laura AT 89thandbroke DOT com.

Try This Trick! Dine Out, Earn Airline Miles!

I’ve been able to take advantage of a free airline ticket once from having frequent flyer miles – and that saved me $300.  If you want to increase your frequent flyer miles, you can enroll credit cards into dining airline mile programs and earn miles in addition to usual credit card rewards.

A few years back, I decided to enroll my two credit cards into the AAdantage Dining Program, so I can earn miles on American Airlines.  You can also enroll your credit card with United’s Dining Program, called Mileage Plus Dining, or Delta’s Skymiles Dining.  Keep in mind you cannot beat the system and have your card enrolled in all three programs – I tried that, so pick the airline you fly the most.

Personally, I’m not the type to pick a restaurant solely based on where I can get airline miles, but what’s nice is every time you use your card, and you do earn miles, you’ll receive a notification in your email.  If you are wondering how quick you can earn an airline ticket, you’ll get 3 miles per every dollar spent as long as you create a profile and elect to receive emails.  If you dine at 12 restaurants in the program in the calendar year, you’ll receive 5 miles for every $1 spent.  To date, I’ve earned more than 3500 airline miles.  While I’m not anywhere near to earning a plane ticket, every little bit helps!  Plus, I still get my traditional rewards on my credit card too.
