Amazing Dinner at La Sirene – and It’s BYOB!

Last night was one of those nights that you wake up the next morning and say, “Wow, I had a really great dinner last night.”

To celebrate my friends’ engagement (yay Amy and Eddie!) we headed to La Sirene on Broome and Varick simply because it was BYOB with no corkage fee.  What we got was a fantastic meal.

Our former blogger here at 89th and Broke, Caryn, swears that if a restaurant provides good bread, the food will be good too. This was the case. The bread, served with olive oil and balsamic was delicious – simple but you couldn’t help but go back for more. When we told our waitress it was our first time at La Sirene, she walked us through the menu sharing her favorite dishes.

To start, we got mini raviolis in a truffle sauce (most apps were around $14). The truffles were extremely mini, but had incredible flavor from just one bit – you were overwhelmed with truffle flavor.  As a fan of truffles, this dish was a big hit with our table – so much so that three of us were dipping the bread into the truffle sauce.

For dinner, I went with the special – tilapia in a white wine sauce with mashed sweet potatoes and mushrooms. Honestly, I can’t even remember all the elements of the dish (at this point, I was several glasses of wine in). All I know is it was phenomenal, I cleaned my entire plate, and then proceeded to use another piece of bread to enjoy all the sauce.  My boyfriend ordered pork tenderloin, which didn’t even make the waitress’s top dishes list, and that was delicious as well – and I don’t even like pork that much.

We celebrated with dessert as well, trying the profiterolles and a homemade lava cake. It was funny – the girls liked the lava cake with the coconut sherbert while the guys preferred the profiterolles.

In a group of 7, there’s usually a few complaints about dinner, but last night there was none – only that we all smelled a little bit like garlic when we walked out.

If looking for a great date spot, or an intimate dinner with friends, La Sirene is the perfect place. And if you don’t believe me, check out the 4.5 star rating on Yelp – there’s 675 reviews for this place.
