I'm a young professional living in Astoria (formerly of Williamsburg, the UES and Murray Hill - I move a lot!). I'm always looking for something fun to do or the best place to grab a drink and dinner at an affordable price around the city. Have a suggestion? Email me at Laura AT 89thandbroke DOT com.

Try This Trick! Thrillist Rewards!

Every day our “Favorite Food Finds” typically encompass KGB Deals, LivingSocial, Groupon, but there’s another site out there: Thrillist Rewards, brought to your from the folks at Thrillist.  Like most deal sites, Thrillist Rewards offer a discount, but unlike offer $10 for $20 or $25 for $50, I like that Thrillist Rewards offers more of a package for the price and it is all carefully curated.  Sure, you’ll have to pay tax and tip, but it’s like for one price, you know what you were getting into.

I’ve bought two Thrillist Rewards so far and have had two completely different experiences.  One was a cheese and cocktail tasting at Beecher’s Cheese for $29.  For this price, I received 4 cheese samples and 4 cocktails.  Truth be told, the cheese wasn’t bad and the mac & cheese we ordered separately was great, but the cocktails literally tasted like drinking some kind of cleaning fluid.  All of us agreed they were terrible and we left some drinks barely touched (which rarely happens with my co-workers).

Another time, we went to Rock & Rose, a karaoke bar in Midtown.  For $99, up to 20 of us could sing karaoke, receive an open bar and a plate of appetizers.  This was probably one of the most phenomenal nights of my life. It started with us at karaoke at 8pm, thinking we’d leave by 9.  Instead, Lulu was generous with the drinks, which led us to singing for an extra hour, which turned into two hours, and enjoying free shots.  Needless to say, I didn’t get home til 1:30am, had a voice hoarse from singing and vaguely remember dancing with a mannequin in a window with a wig on (see photo).  And, we only spent about $25 each outside from our voucher.  Not bad for a long night!

In addition to these experiences, Thrillist Rewards offers a lot of drinking passports – so for example, there will be a gin day where you can enjoy gin cocktails at 6 locations around a neighborhood, with a free appetizer and cocktail at each place. With Cinco de Mayo and the Derby coming up, they have some great events too that may be worth taking advantage of:

So if you are looking for something to do next weekend, or are looking for a new deal site outside of Groupon and LivingSocial, consider signing up for Thrillist Rewards.  And hopefully, your antics will leave you with a super embarrassing photo that you’ll forget about until the next morning like me!
