Enjoyable Night at Lysistrata Jones

Last week, Caryn and I were invited to go see Lysistrata Jones, a new Broadway musical.  The musical is based on the story Lysistrata by Aristophanes.   For those not familiar with the musical, basically the story is a college men’s basketball team is on a losing streak, so the girlfriends of the players decide to hold out on “giving it up” to their boyfriends until they win.

While the show didn’t have a ton of memorable songs, minus When She Smiles which appears in the second act and has been streaming on YouTube in my house for the past week, I found the show to be quite enjoyable. If you were wondering what type of music the show was like, it reminded me a lot of the music from Legally Blonde-type show.  There were plenty of current event jokes peppered throughout the show (a la Penn State, Siri, etc) and I definitely found myself giggling from time to time.  As a twenty-something, the story line was definitely perfect for someone our age group.  I wouldn’t rush to bring my parents to the show, but I’d definitely grab my girlfriends to check it out.

I love Broadway, but some musicals in the past have caused me to open my Playbill mid-show to see how many songs are left in the Act.  Not the case at Lysistrata Jones. The show kept my attention the entire time, and the cast looked like they were having a blast throughout the performance – even the keyboardist and guitarist in the “orchestra” looked happy to be there.

In true 89th and Broke fashion, we have a deal tip for you.  For any of you with student IDs, you can score $25 rush tickets to Lysistrata Jones.  Just visit the box office the day of the performance, beginning at 10am to grab your tickets.  The theater is pretty small, so you’ll have a great seat no matter where you are in the house.  You can also get balcony/upper deck tickets to the show for $25 too, even if you don’t have an ID. If you decide to check it out, let us know what you think!

Disclaimer: We received complimentary tickets to Lysistrata Jones but opinions are our own.
