I recently got a bike, and just to be honest, the bike was really because I wanted to explore other food venues in our neighborhood easily without having to wait for the subway (yes, true confessions of a fat kid). So on Saturday, my boyfriend and I biked to Ditmars Blvd in Astoria to try Just Burgers. Â Just Burgers is an order at the counter type place, where you build your own burger. The girl at the counter was really helpful explaining the menu, and for $23, we got two sodas, two burgers and a side of fries.
Props to Just Burgers for the fountain soda, but the burger was mediocre at best. While I appreciated the loads of melted
cheese on it, it just tasted super greasy. Â It was two patties, but they were both tasteless, not really juicy – just greasy. Â It was also served on a sesame seed bun – to me this wasn’t the end of the world, but Chad (the bf) is not a sesame fan so he was a bit disappointed. Â The sea salt fries, despite eating in the restaurant, were a tad soggy (and I did not notice any difference in that they were sea salt fries). Â I did like that Just Burgers was trying to be innovative with a variety of sauces (yay chipotle aioli) but that was the bright spot of the lunch. I also liked that they had an array of toppings. Â I went simple with just tomatoes, pickles and lettuce. Â I did not like that the lettuce tasted really warm – I do like cold, crisp lettuce on my burger.
I’ll spare you the details, but my boyfriend and I rode our bikes home with our tummies rumbling, and I may have laid in the fetal position within 15 minutes after eating the burger. Â If you find yourself out in Astoria, this is a spot to skip.
The Basics Name: Just Burgers Location: 33-01 Ditmars Blvd Who to Bring: Someone you don’t mind laying in the fetal position with. Price: $ Burgers run about $8. Overall: 2 stars. Not the worst dining experience but not memorable – except for the aftermath.
