Me Gusta Vamos

I love Mexican food, so when I was asked to plan a work event, I immediately thought of a great deal I read about at Vamos, on 20th and 1st.  All day on Monday, you can get all you can eat tacos and a margarita for $19.

We were seated inside the restaurant since we had a group of 6.  Honestly, maybe I’m just getting old, but I felt the place to be a tad on the loud side.  I would have preferred to sit at one of the outdoor tables because I couldn’t hear a word anyone who wasn’t sitting next to me was saying.  Those seated on the end pretty much enjoyed me nodding and smiling throughout the night because I was unable to hear anything and contribute to the conversation.  Who knows, maybe that was a good thing.  So my suggestion is if you go with a larger party and it is nice out, see if you can get outdoor dining.  If it is two or four of you, indoor seating is fine.

We kicked off the meal with some guac and chips.  The guac was great and I liked that you knew it was freshly made considering we were able to pick how spicy we wanted it.  I would have enjoyed it more though if we got more chips.  Most of our chips were broken, and there were two tiny bags for 6 people.

Still, I definitely didn’t need the chips since I was about to embark on all you can eat tacos.  Vamos offered 11 different taco varieties – from salmon, to chicken, to steak, to pork.  I already picked my top three tacos and placed my order, when I discovered that only on each round of ordering, you were able to change taco varieties.  So, for the first order of three tacos, I had to go with one type, but could change on my next order of two tacos.  I went with the carne asada which I really enjoyed especially since it had more guac on it.  After one taco, I realized though I should probably trade with two people to experience more varieties.  The chicken taco was great, but I could have done without the beer battered fried fish since it tasted really fishy to me.  I struggled to get through it though because I was determined to order a second plate.  We all ordered a next round of pork tacos, which I picked solely because it was with a pineapple and mango salsa, and this too I enjoyed.  I guess if I had to rank the tacos, I’d give carne asada first place, followed by the pork, chicken and then the fish.  Also, it is worth noting that your first round of tacos comes with rice and beans.  This was a perfect portion – it wasn’t overwhelming so you were able to focus on the task at hand, which was consuming tacos.

While I tapped out at 4 tacos, I definitely took advantage of the deal.  A plate of three tacos is normally $15, and pair that with an $8 margarita and you are already spending $23.  So I saved myself 4 bucks, even if I didn’t get too out of control with my ordering.

If you head to Vamos, I’d recommend bringing a few friends who would be interested in taking advantage of the taco deal, simply so you can try a bunch of different tacos.  Even if you felt like grabbing tacos on a Thursday, you might as well wait until Monday, because this certainly is a deal!
