I love food festivals, simply because you get to sample different restaurants without breaking the bank. When I saw last week that tickets for TheDealist’s Taste of the Lower East Side were on sale, I got very excited. We had been to another one of their festivals a few months back – Tastes of the Village - and had a great time.
The Lower East Side tasting event will be held on July 17 and 18. In the past, Caryn and I have gone on
Sundays, and hear from restaurant owners that Sunday is typically less-crowded than Saturday. For $18, you can visit the following six restaurants and taste their creations:
- Baohaus – 1 ‘Chairman Bao’ Pork Bun (Niman Ranch pork, crushed peanut, Haus relish)
- Tiny Giant’s – 1 ‘Spicy Rizzak’ sandwich on semolina roll (turkey, bacon, cheddar, hot chipotle mayo)
- Tuck Shop – 1 Mini-Tuck Pie (traditional beef pie)
- Panade – 2 Puffs (1 savory ‘ham & cheese’ mini-puff, and 1 sweet vanilla cream mini-puff)
- Yonah Schimmel Knishery – 1/2 Knish (choice of any flavor, incl. classic potato, spinach, pizza, jalapeno, apple cheese)
- Stuffed Artisanal Cannolis – 2 Mini-Cannolis (choice of any flavor, incl. Original, Chocolate, Peanut Butter & Jelly, Coco-loco and 30+ more)
- Lucky Jack’s – 2-for-1 drinks on everything (except super-premium liquor) for festival-goers from 12 p.m. – 6 p.m.
- Boss Tweeds - $3 bud / bud lights, $10 pitchers on bud / bud light, $1 off all other drinks, from 12 p.m. – 8 p.m.
- Sixth Ward – $4 pints, Six Ward draft light, Sixth Ward amber, with festival ticket
- Sigmund Pretzel Shop - $1 off any pretzel or pretzel sandwich at this highly touted new bakeshop (see New York Times recent coverage)
Just a couple of tips if you decide to go – bring Tupperware and plan to bring home things that you can easily transfer home (i.e. mini-cannolis). Keep in mind that at the event, you can swing by both Saturday and Sunday, so if you don’t want to feel too stuffed, you can head over both days. So buy your tickets now through the 14th for this great event! Enjoy!
