There is a good chance if you are reading this blog, you are under 35. So if you are under 35 and like theater, I strongly recommend you take advantage of Hiptix. Hiptix is a program that provides you with $20 theater tickets to any Roundabout Theatre Company productions.
You can join Hiptix’s email list two different ways. I first spotted Hiptix in a Time Out New York advertisement and so I followed the instructions to log on and sign up for their email list. Eight weeks went by and I may have signed up for it 4 times, waiting for a confirmation and NOTHING happened. But, when I called in to ask about my membership, they had my name on their list of members, so I’m not sure what the hold up was. So I highly suggest you sign up by calling Hiptix. If there is a show you are interested in, you can also wait to sign up for Hiptix when you call to purchase tickets.
Once you sign up, you’ll get emails occasionally telling you what shows are in production, or you can visit their Web site to see what’s playing when. Tickets to any show is only $20, but sometimes around the holidays, like Thanksgiving and Christmas/New Year’s week, you’ll get special promotions to go see any show for $10.
I’ve been on the mailing list since mid-October, but I wanted to try it out before I told you all about it. So this week on Tuesday, I decided to go see the Understudy, mainly because Zach Morris was in it. The week before, I called and purchased two tickets and added that we were both under 35 and a member of Hiptix. I was charged $20 plus a $1.50 service charge per ticket, and picked these tickets up at will call. I was informed that myself and my guest would have to both be present when I picked up the tickets, and both would need to show ID. My guest, Dave, was also a member of Hiptix, but according to their Web site I was surprised that I was able to purchase two tickets since it seemed like you had to “link your account together” in order to purchase a ticket for someone else. A co-worker also was also able to purchase two Hiptix tickets without a problem, so I’d just call and try to order tickets and if you have a hard time, tell your guest to sign up for the program as well.
Anyways, Dave and I picked up the tickets without a problem. Granted we had the last row and were in the mezzanine, but you can’t go wrong in a small theater. Overall show was great (it closes though on Sunday) and I look forward to checking out more Hiptix productions (Present Laughter anyone?). Who said being cultured has to cost a fortune?

I use HIPTIX all the time! Certain nights even have parties after with free food and drink and sometimes the cast. Also, saw Present Laughter last night and recommend it. It was very funny!
So cheap shows with the potential of free food and drinks? I need to sign up ASAP!
