89th And Broke

I'm a young professional living in Astoria (formerly of Williamsburg, the UES and Murray Hill - I move a lot!). I'm always looking for something fun to do or the best place to grab a drink and dinner at an affordable price around the city. Have a suggestion? Email me at Laura AT 89thandbroke DOT com.

Try This Trick! Get Cashback for Online Purchases!

I rarely shop online, but when I do, I spend countless minutes (one time even an hour) surfing the Web for coupon codes in hopes that I save a few bucks.  Often times, half these codes don’t work and I end up disgruntled (yet still order the item).  The other night, my roommate introduced me to Bing.com’s Cashback site and online shopping suddenly seemed appealing.

Bing can work for you in two different ways.  To get started, create a live.com or hotmail.com email address.  Next, sign in to Bing.com/cashback.  Once on the site, you can search for a product you are looking for (i.e. Nine West boots) and dozens of images come up.  You can narrow down your search to include sites that give you cashback, as well as narrow down price range.

For me personally, when looking to make an online purchase, I see if the retailer I’d like to shop at participates in the cashback program.  For example, when ordering pants from Old Navy the other night, I saw that Old Navy was listed as a retailer.  Other participating stores include Sephora, Target and Overstock.  Each store offers a different percent of cashback and some even offer free shipping.  To make a purchase, I logged onto bing.com/cashback, clicked on Old Navy and was directed to the site.  Once on the site, I made my purchase, and was even able to use a coupon code.

By making my purchase through Bing.com, I was able to receive 4% back on my purchase – which was the grand total of $1.  As I continue to shop online through Bing, I’m sure I’ll continue to watch my cashback savings grow.  Once I get my cashback account to a grand total of $5, I’ll be able to transfer my money to my Paypal account or have Bing send me a check.

As always, there are some restrictions.  Keep in mind that the money won’t be delivered to you overnight – for some reason you need to wait a period of 60 days to get your cash.  Also, remember that if you don’t log into the cashback program and click through Bing before logging onto your retailer, you won’t get any money back.

If you shop online a lot, like a good deal or are considering making a large online purchase, I’d encourage you to use this site.  While my little $1 may not seem like a lot, my roommate was able to get $25 when purchasing his computer, and my dad even managed to score $9 from a recent shoe purchase on shoebuy.com.  As my mom always says, the money is better off in your pocket than the retailers.
