As a few sites have noted, including one of our favorites, NYC Daily Deals, the off-broadway 20at20 is in effect through 9/20/09. To recap, you can check out 20 different off-broadway plays (listed if you click the 20at20 link above) for only $20 if you purchase tickets 20 minutes before the curtain. Last year Laura and I went to see Altar Boyz, but unfortunately a woman with a hyena-like laugh ruined the event for us. Nonetheless, we were happy to get seats to any off-broadway show for a Jackson.
It is worth noting that you should call ahead of time to ensure the show isn’t sold out. Otherwise you risk making a trek over there for nothing, like Laura did last year trying to see Cripple of Inishmaan. But I do give one serious warning: do not go see the Toxic Avenger. Per my review, I thought it was just awful, and despite Doug’s wise-cracking comment, he went to see it with Laura and agreed that it was horrible. They passed the time counting down the songs until the end of the show. But on that high note, we still encourage you try a new show for $20!
