A Chelsea Gem: Cafeteria’s Cupcakes

Headed over to a Yelp event last night down in Chelsea to celebrate the neighborhood. While there were several different vendors from all over the neighborhood, one that particularly caught my eye was Chelsea’s Cafeteria. I have never tried the restaurant before, but had heard great things about their mac and cheese – so when I spotted their red velvet cupcakes, I dove right in.

It was love at first bite. The red velvet cake was delicious and I am not a huge cream cheese fan, as in I won’t touch it at all, but I was able to eat the icing.  The only thing that I didn’t like was a slightly tangy aftertaste, but I guess that’s what typically comes with cream cheese.

Of course, I couldn’t try just a half of one, so I grabbed another one on my way out. A little full from the event, I snuck it home – yes I know, ultimate fat kid move right there – and ate it once I got home with some milk. I didn’t want to trust my opinion, so I shared with my roommates to get their thoughts. Justin and his friend felt that the icing was sweeter than typical cream cheese icings, making the icing their favorite part.  Justin also loved the red color.  Alex however, was not as impressed, remarking that the cupcake tasted like something “a room mother made for my 3rd grade class.” My friend Tim who sampled the cupcakes as well thought they were a very tasty treat.

Ultimately, the score was 4-1, in favor of the cupcakes being a thumbs up. While these were complimentary at the event, I’m not too sure I’d reach for my wallet if I was buying – after all, they were $7. However, I’d take the price and get one of these cupcakes over Crumbs any day.

The Basics
Name: Cafeteria
Location: 119 7th Ave (between 17th and 18th)
Who to take: Friend
Price: A little up there for cupcakes. $$.
Overall: Wish I didn’t split that cupcake when I got home. 4 Stars.

  • Hi Laura,

My name is Chad and I’m a manager of Cafeteria. I was at the event yesterday, so glad you liked our cupcakes! I just wanted to clarify that the cupcakes are just a sample, we do not sell those at the restaurant. Actually we serve a huge slice of red velvet cake for $7. It’s actually more than enough for 2 people to share and it’s amazing! Email me your info and I’ll get you a slice on us the next time you come in!

    Thanks again,
    Chad
