Recession Special Tues & Wed- Complimentary Chicken Tenders, Wings & Potato Skins on the Hour!
Clearly, I had to check this out so when Lauren asked where to head for her birthday, my response was TG Whitney’s faster than you could say “Happy Hour”.
The bar wasn’t crowded (then again it was Wednesday) and I was happy to see a 2 for 1 drink special. Unlike most bars that make you purchase two drinks at once or find a drinking buddy, TG Whitney’s gave you a token when you bought a beer, which you could use for payment on your next drink. Still, I think my bartender was confused because I bought two drinks, yet she gave me two tokens instead of charging me just for one drink.
After I ordered my drinks, I waited around for the complimentary appetizers. I don’t really know what I was expecting – maybe a buffet set up, or a situation similar to Crocodile or Alligator Lounge in Union Square or Williamsburg where you get a free pizza with every meal. Regardless, I was expecting to leave somewhat full. Instead, waiters passed out plates to customers with two chicken wings, a tiny potato skin (which was potato and a little bit of cheese) and two chicken tenders, about the size of a thick french fry. It appeared that guests did not receive more than one plate, and our group only received two plates of food for five people. It also took an hour and a half for me to be approached with food.
I really think TG Whitney’s is nice to provide complimentary food, but the quality and quantity of food did not warrant any promotional outreach and efforts surrounding it. Instead of advertising on their Web site that they have free appetizers, I think it would have been a better surprise to walk in and find the appetizers and have it spread word of mouth. I know the free appetizers are a tactic to bring people in, but I would feel much more loyal to a bar if I wasn’t expecting anything for free going in. Going to a bar expecting appetizers and only receiving a chicken wing, half a chicken tender and a tiny potato skin definitely left a sour taste in my mouth. The Basics Name: TG Whitney’s Location: 244 E 53rd St (between 2nd and 3rd) Who to Bring: Friends, Coworkers Cost: Typical NYC Bar. $$. 6 bucks for a draft beer. Overall: 3 stars. Ok bar, not too crowded, but don’t go expecting to get a free dinner.
